Crackling wave spume
erases evidence of our trespass.
A seabird wheels and glides
above boiled lace.
Elephant seals cluster
around their sleeping pups,
share sandy nests among rough grasses,
scattered hassocks of crumbling stone.
Juicy cliffs seep gray succulents
over polished wreckage,
glistening nautical tokens,
broken mystery shells.
Here disjointed crab legs
evoke death's tarantala,
offer dark views into distant caverns,
partial faults we avoid, yet observe.
We meander continental edges, dare
the tired roll and collapse of wind-driven surf.
Latexed boys walk on water
while brown pelicans curse.
